NEW YORK KNICKS GUARD JAMAL CRAWFORD TO UNVEIL “CRAWFORD LIBRARY” AT BRONX’S PS 58 THROUGH PENCIL PARTNERSHIP

What:s

New York Knicks Jamal Crawford will unveil the newly refurbished “Crawford Library” on Thursday, October 25, 2007 beginning at 3p.m. at Bronx’s PS 58.

Mr. Crawford has partnered with the school since last fall through the nonprofit organization PENCIL.  PENCIL works to improve student achievement in New York City public schools by creating and supporting customized partnerships that leverage the expertise, talents, commitment and resources of school and business leaders.  The entire $75,000 project was underwritten by Crawford’s “Jamal Crawford Foundation,” which was established in June 2005.  “Crawford Library” includes new furniture and equipment, including bookshelves, tables and chairs, carpeting, a fresh coat of paint, a computer station, and a collection of new reading materials.  “Crawford Library” was restored with help from Creative Library Concepts, Scholastic, and PENCIL.
Located in the East Tremont section of the Bronx, PS 58 serves a predominantly Hispanic and African American student population in kindergarten through the fifth grade.  The school has large English language learner and special education population.

“I made a promise to Principal Gunn last fall when I first partnered with the school through PENCIL,” said Crawford, who is entering his fifth season with the New York Knicks. “The state of the school’s library was unacceptable, and we agreed that the students deserved far better in order to get excited about reading and learning.  I’m confident they will take full advantage of what this newly renovated library has to offer.”

“We’re proud of Mr. Crawford’s commitment as a partner to PS 58,” said PENCIL President Michael Haberman.  “His work to improve student literacy with Principal Gunn sets an impressive model for our partners, and demonstrates that everyone—even a basketball star—can make the time to give back to our City’s students.”
