Orlando, FL – Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard has been named to the All-NBA Third Team, the league announced this afternoon. Howard becomes the fourth player in Magic history to earn All-NBA honors (O’Neal, Hardaway, McGrady).
The 129-member voting panel of writers and broadcasters throughout the United States and Canada consisted of national media members and members from each of the league’s 30 teams who regularly cover the NBA. The media voted for All-NBA First, Second and Third Teams by position with points awarded on a 5-3-1 basis.
Howard played and started in all 82 games this season for the Magic, averaging a team/career-best 17.6 ppg., a team-high 12.3 rpg., 1.9 apg. and a team/career-best 1.90 blkpg. in a team-high 36.9 minpg. He ranked among NBA leaders in field goal percentage (second), rebounding (third), blocked shots (12th), minutes played (29th) and scoring (T-33rd). Howard was named to his first NBA All-Star team in February and led the Magic back to the playoffs for the first time since 2003.
The All-NBA First Team consists of Phoenix’s Steve Nash and the L.A. Lakers’ Kobe Bryant at guard; San Antonio’s Tim Duncan and Dallas’ Dirk Nowitzki at forward; and Phoenix’s Amare Stoudemire at center.
The All-NBA Second Team consists of Washington’s Gilbert Arenas and Houston’s Tracy McGrady at guard; Cleveland’s LeBron James and Toronto’s Chris Bosh, who makes his first career All-NBA team, at forward; and Houston’s Yao Ming at center.
Joining Howard on the All-NBA Third Team were Dwyane Wade of the Miami Heat and Detroit’s Chauncey Billups at guard; Minnesota’s Kevin Garnett, the NBA’s leading rebounder with 12.8 per game, and Denver’s Carmelo Anthony, the NBA’s second-leading scorer (28.9 ppg), at forwards.
